Original movies make a comeback, superhero movies are weak: Summer box office battle
The box office of "Avengers 6: Secret War" fell short of expectations, and Marvel hit a bottleneck
In early June, Marvel Studios' "Avengers 6: Secret War" closed at $420 million in the first week of global box office. Although it was still the champion of the month, it was significantly lower than the 580 million opening of the previous work "Avengers 5". Film critics generally believe that superhero fatigue can no longer be ignored, and audiences are beginning to get tired of formulaic plots and visual bombardment.
Disney CEO Bob Iger admitted at the earnings conference: "We need to rethink the narrative of superhero movies. In the future, we may reduce annual production and focus more on quality rather than quantity."
"Hurricane" becomes a dark horse, original action movies prove market potential
In sharp contrast, Paramount's original action thriller "Hurricane" was created by the "John Wick" team and directed by new director Emily Chen. With its compact plot and innovative action design, the film won a global box office of 230 million at a cost of 80 million US dollars, becoming the biggest surprise in June.
"Audiences still crave fresh stories, not sequels and remakes," Paramount Pictures CEO Brian Robbins said in an interview.
